The rove beetle is widespread but very local, with a scattered distribution in Great Britain. It has been recorded from damp places, including a fen. The beetle has been found in moss and probably also occurs in plant debris. Water tables should be kept at an adequate level to retain wet conditions and water bodies should be isolated from sources of eutrophication and pollution (Hyman & Parsons, 1992, as S. exiguus).
